In a chair in Harold’s Barber Shop
On the north side of the square
The old man sat beside me
Harold cutting both his hairs
I was 16 years of attitude
Flat ornery and flat broke
So he started like he always did
Offered me a can of Coke
The sodas led to small talk
And he brought the question up
Have you thought about a future
Beyond these fields and these old trucks?
And I’d say again I hadn’t
But I thought I might someday
He smiled a patient smile
And this is what he had to say
I’ve seen boys like you before
Who never stopped to look around
It’s hard to know just what you’ve lost
If your dreams are never found
I’ve seen people take a moment
And change a lifetime with a thought
Just open up your eyes
And forget the things you’re not
Small people ifted up to live like kings
Yeah I’ve seen some things
In a chair in that same barber shop
10 years to the day
I’d come back to visit family
Been deployed a world away
He pointed toward the TV
As conflict flashed across the screen
Put his hand down on my shoulder
He asked me what I’d seen
I’ve seen casualties and IEDs
And the heavy fog of war
I’ve killed and hurt and died inside
To keep the wolves outside the door
But I’ve seen helpless people lifted up
By the strength in these two hands
And I’ve felt God’s intervention
As we saved our fellow man
I’ve stood to toll the bell that freedom rings
Yeah I’ve seen some things
One more trip to that old barber shop
Sat beside an empty chair
I placed a can of Coke down on the arm
And I said a little prayer
Then we all walked down to church
The service was a great success
Drove out to the cemetery
Where we laid him down to rest
I heard angels flying over
Saw the glory of the Lord
As we sent him on to Jesus
Felt the power of his words
How He sends us out with purpose
And he helps us find our place
Shows us all the strength we need
By the power of his grace
So I smiled and whispered death where is your sting
Cause now I’ve seen some things
I’ve seen some things
I’ve seen some things
I’ve seen some things
